Screen Actors Guild Awards 2014

The Screen Actors Guild Awards show is the most laid back of the season. This show is different from the others because the nominees and winners are voted and decided on by fellow actors. All actors in the guild have the opportunity to see the movies and cast their votes with their peers. It's a pretty cool idea, and brings new meaning to the phrase, "You like me, you really like me!"

This awards show is also different because there is no host to lead the night along. Instead of a monologue from a host, it opens with various actors and actresses giving a their "and I am an actor." lines. Last night's theme included a little trip down memory lane and how the actors received their SAG cards. It's also nice because since it's just the actor's guild, not the director's or writer's who have their own guild, the award show is shorter and you don't have to sit through categories you know nothing about.

One of my favorite acceptance speeches from the night include one from Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She brought up a notecard to read, but it was the notecard she made for the Golden Globes (where she didn't win). When she noticed the mistake, she turned it over only to begin reading, "I'd like to thank The Academy..." and had nothing ready for the SAGs because no one thought she would win. She was just as hilarious at the Globes, and I can't wait to see what the Oscars hold for the Veep star.
Modern Family's Ty Burrell won for Outstanding Performance By an Actor in a Comedy Series and his speech was just as good, if not better, than JLD. He gave tips from his (fake?) acting guide, "Acting: How to Do It Good," and it will more than likely be a speech for the books. My favorite of the five tips? "Have no skill-set other than being a needy extrovert."
82-year-old Rita Moreno received this year's Life Achievement Award, and showed that you can be sassy at any age. (also that you can still rock a spiked leather jacket at any age. go 'head, girl.) She started her speech with, “I am so f***ing thrilled," and immediately followed with, 'I'm sorry about that word...actually, I'm not!'
Cate Blanchett won for her role in Blue Jasmine and must have been immediately prompted to keep her speech short to which she responded, "Matthew McConaughey spoke about Neptune, so I think I can have five seconds." And if that wasn't perfect enough, she said she would be sharing the award with her co-star Sally Hawkins. More specifically, "This is half yours. The penis part." (the award is in the shape of an actor)

If I couldn't have an acceptance speech from Jennifer Lawrence (beat out by 12 Years a Slave Lupita Nyong'o) at least I got to enjoy the above speeches from other hilarious and sassy actors. However, JennyLawr did provide a little humor during her presentation of the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. Struggling to open the envelope she said, "They really seal these up."
