Shopperly App

This semester I landed an internship with a start-up company called Shopperly.
It's a new app for the iPhone and is a dream-come-true whether you're someone who is addicted to shopping, giving opinions or impossible at making decisions!

Shopperly app

Shopperly allows users to do something we do with our friends every weekend: choose the perfect outfit. But what sets Shopperly apart from your clique of friends? Honesty! Yes, some of us may be lucky enough to have honest, sometimes too honest!, friends who will tell you just how fat your look in that dress. Unfortunately, we do not all have that luxury. Thankfully, Shopperly here is to save the day. And your fat --- in that bodycon dress you bought at Body Central last week. It's okay, bad things happen to good people, we understand and we forgive you.

Here are a few things you can do with the app:
Users can post outfits from stores that they want to buy and their followers can give opinions on which one they should buy. You can also click through to websites to purchase outfits posted that you liked.

You can upload photos of outfits that you already have to get instant, unbiased opinions from users and followers of the fast growing community. Can't decide what to wear on a first date? Birthday dinner? Night out with the girls? Shopperly users can help!

The immediate, unbiased feedback is becoming so addicting that users are wanting opinions on more than just clothing! The app is being used for everything: to what theme they should use for a party to dorm decor.

You can post your options to Facebook and Twitter as well, to get even more feedback from your Facebook friends and those who "Like" the Shopperly page.

This app is super fun, easy and unlike anything you have taking up space on your iPhone. It's time to delete a few useless apps of your phone and download something you will actually use! You can download Shopperly from the app store HERE, as well as find us on  Facebook and Twitter.

Take some time and see what Shopperly is all about! The app just launched over the holidays and there are already several million opinions given out to different looks.
C'mon ladies, who doesn't want to hear how "totes cute" you look in that skater skirt?
Men, maybe it's time you see how many people vote against your American flag Chubbies...

Don't be like Minnie and let the mirror be your only opinion!

Screen Actors Guild Awards 2014

The Screen Actors Guild Awards show is the most laid back of the season. This show is different from the others because the nominees and winners are voted and decided on by fellow actors. All actors in the guild have the opportunity to see the movies and cast their votes with their peers. It's a pretty cool idea, and brings new meaning to the phrase, "You like me, you really like me!"

This awards show is also different because there is no host to lead the night along. Instead of a monologue from a host, it opens with various actors and actresses giving a their "and I am an actor." lines. Last night's theme included a little trip down memory lane and how the actors received their SAG cards. It's also nice because since it's just the actor's guild, not the director's or writer's who have their own guild, the award show is shorter and you don't have to sit through categories you know nothing about.

One of my favorite acceptance speeches from the night include one from Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She brought up a notecard to read, but it was the notecard she made for the Golden Globes (where she didn't win). When she noticed the mistake, she turned it over only to begin reading, "I'd like to thank The Academy..." and had nothing ready for the SAGs because no one thought she would win. She was just as hilarious at the Globes, and I can't wait to see what the Oscars hold for the Veep star.
Modern Family's Ty Burrell won for Outstanding Performance By an Actor in a Comedy Series and his speech was just as good, if not better, than JLD. He gave tips from his (fake?) acting guide, "Acting: How to Do It Good," and it will more than likely be a speech for the books. My favorite of the five tips? "Have no skill-set other than being a needy extrovert."
82-year-old Rita Moreno received this year's Life Achievement Award, and showed that you can be sassy at any age. (also that you can still rock a spiked leather jacket at any age. go 'head, girl.) She started her speech with, “I am so f***ing thrilled," and immediately followed with, 'I'm sorry about that word...actually, I'm not!'
Cate Blanchett won for her role in Blue Jasmine and must have been immediately prompted to keep her speech short to which she responded, "Matthew McConaughey spoke about Neptune, so I think I can have five seconds." And if that wasn't perfect enough, she said she would be sharing the award with her co-star Sally Hawkins. More specifically, "This is half yours. The penis part." (the award is in the shape of an actor)

If I couldn't have an acceptance speech from Jennifer Lawrence (beat out by 12 Years a Slave Lupita Nyong'o) at least I got to enjoy the above speeches from other hilarious and sassy actors. However, JennyLawr did provide a little humor during her presentation of the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. Struggling to open the envelope she said, "They really seal these up."

Below are my favorite looks from the red carpet!

Lupita Nyong'o in Gucci.

Amy Adams in Antonio Berardi.

Sandra Bullock in Lanvin.
Not too crazy about the bow, but the color and slit are amazing.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior.

Matthew McConaughey in another Dolce & Gabbana printed suit.
Wife Camila Alves in Vintage Donna Karan Atelier.

Sofia Vergara in Donna Karan.

Anna Gunn in Monique Lhuiller and crafty Breaking Bad logo clutch.

Katrina Bowden in Badgley Mischka.

Oscar Nominations 2014

The nominees for the 86th Annual Academy Awards were announced by Chris Hemsworth this morning! He revealed the actresses, actors, directors, writers and films up for nominations with Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences lives from  the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. I didn't get to watch the livestream because I was in class (which is where I'm writing this post from now...sorry Professor Haney!), but if you know me at all you know that I was glued to my Twitter feed the second I got a bit of reception. (If you know the Coliseum at USC, you know cell phone reception is limited and treasured.)

Upon checking the Oscars twitter (@TheAcademy) I found the list of nominations. (keep in mind I'm only including the categories we tend to care about most. I can bet none of you (at least most of you) have seen or heard of any of the foreign films, documentaries, etc.) I also decided not to include the nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling because American Hustle was not nominated, and that, my dear readers, is a travesty in and of itself.

Snagging another nomination for Best Supporting Actress, 23-year-old Jennifer Lawrence is now the youngest actress to have 3 consecutive nominations (Winter’s Bone, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle). If she wins this year for her role as Rosalyn in David O. Russell’s American Hustle, she will have the most wins to nominations ratio at 2-3. This win will be her second consecutive win, as she won last year for her role as Tiffany in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook. KILLIN. THE. GAME. JENNYLAWR. She said in her Golden Globes press conference that she has hopes to direct one day. As a loyal fan, I must support her choices, but I'm hoping that day doesn't come too soon, or that acting is never out of the picture completely.

Leonardo Dicaprio is nominated for Best Actor for his role as Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. This is Dicaprio’s fourth nomination, but he has yet to win an Academy Award for his own merit. Like I said before, this past weekend at the Golden Globes he won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for this role, which is normally an early indicator for the Oscars. Unfortunately, Dicaprio has been in this same situation before, so this could go either way for him. He is now up against Matthew McConaughey, however, who won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama at the Globes. Stiff competition here, people! I have not seen Dallas Buyers Club, but 45lbs dropped by McConaughey is pretty impressive. Will The Academy deem it Oscar-worthy?

Meryl Streep (the original queen) now leads overall actress nominations with eighteen! She is the most nominated actress in Oscar history, as well as being one of the most praised. That being said, she also has the lowest ratio of wins at 3 wins to 17 nominations, not including today’s announcement. She's up against Amy Adams though, who won last weekend, so things could get tricky for voters here, too! But really, who doesn't love a good Meryl Streep acceptance speech? (My favorite being from the 2012 Oscars)

Barkhad Abdi is nominated for his first Oscar after completing his first movie! Playing opposite of Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, Abdi auditioned after seeing a commercial for the casting of the role on television. Prior to landing this first acting gig, he was a limo driver! If that's not a happy story, I don't know what is.

The show will be hosted by the always charming and hilarious Ellen Degeneres who tweeted about the nominations announcement, "Woke up early to be ready for the ! I've got my coffee and my bagel and my -- what do you mean it was at 4 in the morning?" She has hosted before and we can only hope she will be even funnier than she was then. Will she be funnier than Tina + Amy's Golden Globes performance?

This awards season is shaping up to be the best, and most stressful, yet. How the voters choose between all these amazing films like American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, 12 Years a Slave, and so on is shocking. Who will win the coveted Academy Award and make history? We will find out on March 2nd!

2014 Golden Globes

"It's the most wonderful time of the year...It's the happiest season of all!" You've heard this tune a lot in the last couple months, but I'm bringing it back for MY favorite season:
AWARD SEASON!

There are only a handful of things that make my pop culture junkie heart swell more than the span of awards shows in the winter. It's the time of year where we get to watch the celebrities we love (and love to hate––Taylor Swift, I'm talking to you) walk the red carpet in luxurious couture gowns, give hilarious interviews (Jennifer Lawrence, I'm talking to you) and listen to their train wreck acceptance speeches (Jacqueline Bisset, I'm talking to you and the bottle (or two) of wine you had before the show).

The Golden Globes was the first show of the season last night at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. Tina Fey + Amy Poehler were back as sophomore hosts and there was no slump in sight. The two comediennes were as beautiful as they were funny throughout the entire show. (Refer to my tweet: "All of Tina + Amy's looks tonight are FUH. LAW. LESS. flawless enough that a third syllable is needed.) The opening monologue was one for the books! My favorite jokes involved the camera cutting to Jennifer Lawrence as Amy Poehler, Tina saying that the movie Gravity shows what lengths George Clooney will go to to get out of being alone with a woman his own age and the two 'calling out' Julia-Louis Dryfus and how she chose to sit in the film section of the theatre and cutting to JLD in sunglasses smoking an e-cigarette while they hosts called out, "Hi, Julia. Hi. Remember us?" TV gold here, people.

On to fashion: there were a few trends emerging on the red carpet last night, as well as a few (THANK YOU!) risk takers. Check out the photos of trends and my favorite looks below and see which you like best!

Lupita Nyong'o in Ralph Lauren.

Best Actress winner for American Hustle, Amy Adams in Valentino.

Emma Watson killed killed killed it in this risky Dior number. A backless gown with Sandy-from-Grease inspired hot pants underneath? Yes, yes, all day, yes. Thank you, Hermione, for showing us that there are still people trying to step outside the box. (and thank you even more for stepping out of it in those navy pumps.)

Cate Blanchett in Armani.

Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen.
How thankful are we that she's not in a mermaid gown!?

Jessica Chastain is my definition of an A-list Hollywood movie star.
Here she is in Riccardo Ticci for Givenchy.

The Queen in Dior. Will this be her go-to designer again this season? I don't love the dress, but I like it. Her hair, makeup and accessories are perfect. That dark lip makes up for it! How can't you love this girl?! Her silly antics on the red carpet, and during TSwift's interview at that, is another reason on my list of why we should (will) be best friends.

Let's here it for the boys! As much as I love all black on a man, I love a little color.
Orlando Bloom in a navy Lanvin suit and Best Actor winner for Dallas Buyers Club, Matthew McConaughey in a forest green velvet suit by Dolce & Gabbana. Chris Hemsworth wore the same D&G velvet suit, but in navy. We applaud you all and we appreciate you.

Naomi Watts in Tom Ford.

The Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie in Gucci.
The emerald details on the dress and matching shoes are the icing on this perfect cake.

Sarah Hyland in Georges Hobeika.

The winner's circle: I am so excited Leonardo DiCaprio won for his role as Jordan in The Wolf of Wall Street! This man is on the road to the Oscars and I think it is finally his time to get one. (really, it's been his time. what has the academy been thinking all these years!?) Obviously I am thrilled Jennifer Lawrence won for American Hustle. Her speech was perfect, "I actually did watch all of the movies. Not all of them, but you know what I mean." And her answers in the press room after the show were hilarious. Upon being asked a question by a foreign interviewer she said, "Anyone else get that?" LOL and told interviewers to keep interrupting her because she will ramble on forever.
Where as Jacqueline Bisset's speech was not so perfect, but it was hilarious. She tried to begin her speech multiple times before she went on and on and talked over the music so much that they turned it off, waited, and turned it back on again! It was definitely a speech everyone will be talking about this season and for seasons to come...
Bisset and a few other winners also had an uncomfortably/awkwardly long walk to the stage last night. I'm convinced seating arrangements at awards shows are directly correlated to 1) your name and what you're being nominated for and 2) how likely they think you are to win and actually need to get to the stage in a timely manner.
Freshman comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and its star Andy Samberg were big (surprising) winners last night. I was pulling for Modern Family, naturally, and was shocked that it didn't win! I've never seen BNN, so I can't say too much until I do. But really, who isn't obsessed with Phil Dunphy? I guess it was just MoFy's time to "Phil Dun-feat" HIS PUN NOT MINE.
