Bright Lights in the Big City

Hello!

This week was my first week living in New York City and also as a Badgley Mischka sales intern. I have been so busy I have had no time to write about it until now!

On sunday I went to Carlo's Bake Shop (or where Buddy the Cake Boss works at for all of you TLC fans) with my parents before I moved into the city. We waited in line for about 30 minutes, but it was well worth the wait! We bought various pastries including their famous crumble cake (cinnamon crumb cake) and it was amazing. It's hard to stay away from Hoboken knowing that cinnamon-y goodness is right across the water.

After Cake Boss, we went to University Hall, the NYU dorm I am living in this summer. I am right in the heart of Union Square. This is my view from the 13th floor! My program held a first-night dinner and I got to mingle with my new hall-mates. Monday morning we had orientation to learn about what we would be doing over the next two months. I was lucky enough to meet a fun group of girls after for lunch and we mapped out our way to work. We got over our fear of the subway and took the Q to 42nd Street.

Then it was the big day! I could barely sleep Monday night knowing I was starting the next morning. I wore the outfit below. A blush colored, ruffled collar and sleeved top with cropped black pants and spiked flats. I began my day with a subway ride with 3 other girls and we were so early that we sat at a coffee shop before work began. Then at 10 I went into my building where the doorman (what!?) called the elevator for me and I took it to the 22nd floor. The elevator doors opened to a beautiful lobby with mirrored tables and frosted glass walls. I got a tour of the floor and the entire office staff was insanely friendly! My first day consisted of meeting everyone, finding all of the samples in the closet that were sold out and taking them to the archive closet, filing paperwork from buyers, and gathering photos of their latest collection for Neiman Marcus's Conclave where Badgley Mischka is the featured designer this year! While doing this, both Mark and James (the designers of the brand) came into the room and I was completely star struck! I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to talk to them both for a few minutes! They were so sweet!
What a great way to spend my first day!

These are my favorite pieces from their Fall 2013 collection. I was lucky enough to work with them in the showroom! Jana Kramer (country singer and former One Tree Hill star) wore the dress to the American Country Music Awards show this year.

This is an inside look of the waiting area and part of the showroom at Badgley Mischka. On Wednesday, my second day, I took the photos I collected the day before and helped select which looks would be used in the Conclave fashion show, what trends should be featured and what order they would go in. I also learned how to use the brand's computer program Apparel Magic. We use this to look up each and every dress, gown, shirt or skirt within the company.

Wednesday night I went to Times Square with a group of girls and we had a blast! We were very touristy and took too many pictures and bought ice cream from a Mr. Softie ice cream truck.

The outfit below is what I wore on Thursday: a high waisted maxi and cropped halter top with a sock bun. It was an exciting day at work, we had our go-to model Gigi (she was incredibly nice) come in for a fitting for their upcoming line. I assisted her in changing out of about 20 dresses as the designers and a few other key players in the company tweaked and tailored each cocktail dress or gown. Two other interns and I then took that new collection and printed stickers that had various information about the dress on them and applied them to the Badgley Mischka tags and used a tag gun to attach each one to the dress.

After work on Thursday, I went to the 86th floor of the Empire State Building with a group of friends. The view was amazing! It was eerily quite at the top of the balcony even though there were a few hundred people up there. Unfortunately, about 98% of those people were incredibly rude and it was a struggle and took a few shoves to get these next few shots.

My new friends Gina, Sarah and Melissa!

View from 86 stories. Hello, NYC!

Today (Friday) was a shorter day. I wore a charcoal maxi dress and layered a few new chain necklaces. I started the day by tagging a few more new dresses. After that, another intern and I sewed labels on to about 15 new collection dresses. (shocking isn't it? me sewing? I finally learned, and have a few needle pricks on my hand to prove it!) We then went to pick up books that included all of the looks that would be used in the Neiman Marcus fashion show and mailed them out. We did a few more small tasks before we left for the day. The company has "summer fridays" so we get to leave early, how exciting!

Tomorrow my program is taking the group on a double decker bus tour of the city and then treating us to dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. We are so excited to be the ultimate tourists for a few hours!

I'll leave you guys with a picture of Minnie Mouse in a new(er), haute look. The navy gown and red tiara was debuted last year in Paris. It was designed by Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz. As much as I love the traditional red and white polka dotted dress, a little evening wear never hurt anyone.

Keep checking back for more about my days here in the city!

Cannes you believe these looks?

Being able to attend Cannes Film Festival is something most of us can only dream of. Days are filled with amazing actors, films, and fashion–all while being in France! (Being an Entourage buff, I can't hear Cannes without immediately thinking of Vince and the boys heading to the festival trying to sell Meddellin before it screens.) This year the fashion was BEYOND, and my friends and I cannot stop talking about how amazing everyone looks. (we also hope to one day be as fierce as the women I'm about to talk about and be styling them in the years to come. fingers crossed, please!)

Nicole Kidman was seen in this Valentino gown during the premier of Nebraska. Look familiar? This dress was the one Anne Hathaway was supposed to wear to the Oscars this year. Bet she wishes she didn't make that last minute decision to switch looks, maybe we would all be talking about her flawless gown as opposed to how, ahem, cold, she was throughout the ceremony. Oh well, Nicole looks amazing in this dress nonetheless. The faux-bob also looks great with the high neckline.

It was the heartbreak heard around the world the day Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake got married. I mean, he is the epitome of a class act, perfection. His fashion sense is impeccable and I'm sure his role in Inside Llewyn Davis will be remarkable like everything else he puts his time into. He Cannes do it all! (as if i could resist that pun.) Justin had us absolutely swooning when talking about Jessica during the Ellen DeGeneres Show. He said, "If you always make bad decisions for the rest of your life, at least you made one good decision." Cue the melting hearts. No wonder Jessica looks like she is glowing in this beautiful nude gown. The detail is so intricate it is so mesmerizing on her. Ugh, they are so beautiful. I can't.

Speaking of his new movie, here is Justin with his Inside Llewyn Davis costars.
Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, and Oscar Isaac

Solange Knowles looked fantastic at the Gatsby premier this year at Cannes. This is the kind of fashion the festival is all about! It's high fashion and dramatic. The sheer dress is Stephane Rolland Couture and the high-cut leotard underneath was genius. Maybe Solange needs to give a few fashion tips to her older sister? Sorry, B.

Eva Longoria follows Solange and gives us the drama we are looking for. This dress by Marchesa is similar in color to the one worn on Jessica Biel. It works beautifully on Eva's skin and the attention to detail is one only Marchesa could give us.

Sharon Stone looked spectacular at the Cannes amfAR Cinema Against Aids Gala. 55 years old and wearing Roberto Cavalli, this actress looked better than a lot of the younger stars. It is styled so well with hair, jewelry, and make up and the snake slithering down her back is so sexy. She has 20 year olds wanting to be her and have that body!

Last, but certainly not least, Jennifer Lawrence was a vision in Dior. It fits her perfectly and the neon pink pumps really tie the outfit together. She has really blossomed into a fashionista. At 22 years old, things can only go up from here for this Oscar winner and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next!

I am leaving for NYC today! I can't believe something I have been dreaming of for the past 10-12 years is finally happening. I will begin my internship with Badgley Mischka on Tuesday and I am freaking out! Wish me luck.

Billboard Music Awards 2013

Hey guys!

As a pop culture junkie, I was glued to the screen last night during the Billboard Music Awards.

My highlights/lowest points of the night:
      (in no particular order)

  1. JLo crotch shot
  2. Miguel kicking a fan in the head during his performance
  3. Nicki Minaj's lap dance to Lil Wayne
  4. Miley Cyrus's completely obvious disgusted face upon announcing JBiebs win
  5. The massive amounts of lip synching (how is that okay and accepted!?)
  6. Prince still killing his performances as always
  7. Taylor Swift's kind of funny comment about her fans being her longest relationship (I can never decide if TSwift would be my enemy or my BFF. Am I the only one?)
  8. Justin Bieber getting BOOED during his acceptance speech for the Milestone Award (which I thought he handled pretty well considering he was about to cry)
  9. TSwift's reaction to Selena Gomez and JBiebs meeting and cheek kissing backstage
  10. CELINE DION making an appearance and looking better than ever.

Now for what we've all been waiting for, the fashion of the evening:

Celine Dion looked amazing in this structured green-hued gold dress!
She has aged amazingly. If only I can be that lucky.

Miley in this Balmain jumpsuit was perfect. Her hair is styled so well, and everyone can appreciate her ability to take risks and not follow the crowd.

Sorry, Ke$ha. No matter how great your body is,
I don't think anyone was wanting to see your a$$ on the blue carpet..

Okay. Taylor looks amazing.
She finally strayed from the white dress and soft hair. THANK YOU!

Thanks, but no thanks Jenny from the block. We know you love the plunging neckline,
but it's time for a change. and maybe a little more volume to your hair, too.

Selena looked beautiful last night!
The neon accents and cut outs made this dress young, fresh, and flirty.

I was even more obsessed with her outfit change after her performance.
LOVE her hair long and highlighted.

Well, that about does it for this year's BBMA. All I have left to say is this: Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, the Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus are all coming out with new music this year. Next year's BBMAs will be even more amazing than last night! I'm already counting down the days!

NYC UPDATE: I am moving into NYU's University Hall this Sunday to begin my summer internship and classes! It is in my nature to severely overpack, and my suitcases are busting at the seams. I'm already racking my brain on what to wear for my first day at Badgley Mischka. Any thoughts or ideas?

Maybe a red dress with polka dots?

ending remarks: I am VP of PR for Fashion Board at USC and we are totally revamping our social media! We have a blog that will have frequent stories of all of our members that are interning in NYC and studying abroad this summer. If you like to read my blog, FB USC is totally for you! Met Gala 2013: Fashionably Punk

Hey there!

If you are anything like me and my friends, you were glued to your laptop watching the Met Gala red carpet live stream on Monday night!

I honestly could not take another minute of the two hosts. They were so unprofessional and unprepared! Where was E!, Giuliana, and Ryan Seacrest when you need them? Though the two correspondents were bland and lacked enthusiasm, the fashion was far from it. High Society stepped out in their own take on "punk" to fit the theme of this year's Gala. Here are a few of my favorite looks:

FLAWLESS. Anne Hathaway is every bit outside of her element and comfort zone. She made a drastic change, and it paid off. She has never looked better! Vintage Valentino from 1992, how much more authentic punk can you get?

Yesss, Rooney Mara. I am OBSESSED with Ms. Mara. The angelic white lace dress was paired perfectly with a dark lip, bold brow, and sleek pony. She is definitely channeling her inner Lisbeth Salander (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, anyone?)

I'm hoping she is preparing to shoot the sequel, and that is the reason why her hair looks so short from behind! Also, who doesn't love a cut out back?

Miley Cyrus may not have been on everyone's best dressed list, but you can't deny that the girl committed to punk and ran with it. She seriously looks like she stepped out of the 90s. MiCy is one of my fashion icons, and I can't say anything bad about her.

SJP didn't disappoint. The faux-hawk is to die for. We should all take fashion risks like this from time to time. Am I the only one who still finds it impossible to separate her from her fashionista alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw?

Model Cara Delevingne set the bar high last night. A spiked dress, smokey eye, and slightly greased hair made her look one of my favorites. Her eyes constantly look hypnotizing, and I don't think I'm the only one who has fallen under her spell.

Jennifer Lawrence is another one of my idols. At 22 years old, she has accomplished more than most of us ever will. She was stunning in Dior as usual. All black is always in style, the details on the dress are amazing, and the veil on her face is the icing on the cake.

What did you guys think of the event? Who were your best and worst dressed of the night?

xx

Sunday, May 5, 2013

Hello!

Hi everyone!

I'm Alana (a-lay-na) and I'm a 20-year-old PR major,
fashion merchandising minor at the University of South Carolina.

I've created this blog as a way to keep myself and others updated on my upcoming internship in NYC this summer. This blog will be a place to share what I love and what inspires me with others who can use it to inspire them, help them and hopefully help me in return!

I chose the name Minnie Maus Fashion Haus because I am obsessed with Minnie Mouse, fashion, and puns/play on words (maus, haus). I took a cue from Mother Monster, Lady Gaga, and her Haus of Gaga and ran with it. Minnie has been an icon for decades and it is impossible to forget her red, polka dot dress. She is the epitome of femininity and is always classy. (Not to mention she has her man Mickey straight up whipped.) Every girl can take a tip from Ms. Mouse.

She also isn't afraid to step outside her comfort zone and take a fashion risk!

I will begin my internship in the Badgley Mischka showroom this month and I am beyond excited! I am currently interning with Flock and Rally, a PR firm in Columbia, SC. Also, I am a fashion blogger for www.oBaz.com. I post daily look books on my favorite trends and you can check them out here!

I hope to keep this blog updated at least weekly, and hope to make it something people enjoy reading! I am finishing up my finals week here at USC, so bear with me the next few days.
